Mousehole
pronounced ‘Mowzel’ is one of the most beautiful unspoilt
fishing villages in Britain with its granite and slate cottages and
its maze of narrow winding streets. It provides a choice of shops, art
and craft galleries, inns and places to eat.
There are two very safe sandy beaches that are ideal for
families with young children and at the side of the harbour there is
a large stony beach with rock pools and a paddling pool that has been
set amongst the rocks. On the other side of the harbour is the Mousehole
cave that was used by generations of Cornish smugglers.
Mousehole Bird Sanctuary was founded in 1928 and treats
around 1500 birds a year, it became famous after the Torrey Canyon disaster
in 1967 when over 8,000 oiled sea birds were treated in the hospital.
The sanctuary is now a registered charity and run solely on voluntary
contributions. Visitors are very welcome and admission is free.
